“Just five more minutes” of cartoons has a way of becoming an hour — and most parents we talk to don’t want zero screens, they just want easy alternatives that don’t require a Pinterest craft room. Here are 20 screen-free activities for toddlers and preschoolers you can start in under two minutes, grouped by situation, using things you already have (plus a few toys that earn their place).
No-prep activities (0 minutes setup)
- Sock matching race — dump the laundry sock pile, race to find pairs. Sorting is early maths.
- Kitchen band — steel dabbas, wooden spoon, one song. Loud, yes. Happy, very.
- Pillow path — cushions across the floor, “the floor is lava”. Gross motor skills, zero cost.
- Colour hunt — “find me 5 red things in this room”. Works in waiting rooms too.
- Mirror faces — copy each other’s expressions. Sneaky emotional-recognition practice.
Quiet-time activities (for when you need 20 minutes)
- Puzzle basket — a wooden alphabet puzzle or number puzzle kept specially for quiet time stays novel.
- Button patterns — Magic Circles foam buttons: sort by colour, make rangoli patterns, count into cups.
- Chalkboard “office” — a chalkboard toy plus “important work to finish” = 20 minutes of serious scribbling.
- Sticker story — one sheet of stickers, one sheet of paper, “tell me what’s happening”.
- Rice tray writing — a thali with a layer of rice; trace letters with a finger.
Bath-time learning (the most underrated hour)
- Tile tangrams — water-sticking foam tangram shapes stick to bathroom tiles with just water. Build a fish, a house, a rocket.
- Fraction pizza in the tub — older preschoolers love the foam fraction set — halves and quarters stuck on the wall.
- Sink or float — gather 6 bathroom objects, predict, test. That’s a science lesson.
Rainy-day and travel activities
- Stamp-art story — the Safari Stamp Art kit is our go-to train-journey toy: compact, mess-free, finishes with something to show grandparents.
- India map challenge — with the Puzzle My India map puzzle: “find the state where Nani lives”. Geography through family stories.
- Indoor picnic — bedsheet on the floor, snacks, everything tastes better on a picnic.
- Tape road — paper tape “roads” across the floor for toy cars.
Everyday-chores-as-play
- Chef’s assistant — washing vegetables, tearing coriander, stirring (off the stove). Toddlers adore real work.
- Plant doctor — a small watering can and a daily “round” of the plants.
- Folding helper — matching and folding napkins. Imperfectly. Gloriously.
And when you do allow a screen…
Make it count: our free browser games — Alphabet Adventure, Number Land, India Quest and Jungle Safari — are ad-free, short by design, and built to send kids back to hands-on play. Ten minutes of phonics game, then the real puzzle comes out.
Frequently asked questions
How much screen time is okay for a toddler?
Indian Academy of Pediatrics guidance is no screens under 2 years, and under an hour a day of supervised, quality content for 2–5 year olds. The realistic goal for most families isn’t zero — it’s screens as the exception, not the default.
My child gets bored of activities in five minutes. Normal?
Completely. Toddler attention spans run roughly 2–3 minutes per year of age. Offer two or three activities in a row, and let them return to a favourite — repetition is how they learn, not a failure of the activity.
What’s the best screen-free toy to start with?
One good puzzle. It’s self-correcting, quiet, and grows with the child — see our puzzle collection for options from 2 years up.
